Moderate danger for wildfires in Colorado

Even with all the rain, the fire danger still exists.
The fire danger is moderate in parts of Colorado.

KUSA - July is typically one of the busiest months for wildfires in Colorado, but that hasn't been the case in 2014.

Still, fire experts want to remind Coloradans that, even though it's been a mild start to the fire season, fuels and grasses across Colorado are starting to dry out.

Tyler Sugaski is a firefighter and wildland shift coordinator at West Metro Fire and Rescue.

Sugaski says those who live in areas like Douglas or Jefferson counties might notice the grass in open space is starting to turn brown.

Sugaski says with late spring and early summer rains Colorado has been experiencing, fire danger is lower than the 10-year average.

"However fuels are curing and drying out along the Front Range. It is important to know a wildfire can strike at any time," Sugaski said.

The monsoon pattern will also be a key factor as to how the rest of the summer looks for wildfire danger.

Sugaski says those monsoon rains come with lightning, which can spark fires despite the rains.
