COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — A wildfire at Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge Saturday was human-caused.
Rocky Mountain Arsenal posted on social media at 3:50 p.m. Saturday that five engines were responding to a small wildfire near East 64th Avenue and North Peoria Street, with more crews on the way.
About 30 minutes later, they posted that forward spread of the fire had been halted. It was 12 to 15 acres in size.
The fire was fully contained just after 5 p.m., but crews stayed at the scene to monitor the fire and do mop-up work. A spokesperson for Rocky Mountain Arsenal said the fire was caused by a cigarette.
Wildlife Drive and trails in the area were closed during the response. They were back open by 7:40 p.m.
"Conditions are hot and dry. It may look green, but fires will spread quickly," Rocky Mountain Arsenal posted.
