Juvenile suspected of starting fire that burned near homes in Castle Pines

The brush fire Tuesday morning burned more than an acre near Bristolwood Lane and Monarch Boulevard.

CASTLE PINES, Colo. — A juvenile is suspected of starting a brush fire that burned about one and a half acres along a pathway in a Castle Pines neighborhood, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said on Wednesday.

The fire was reported about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday near Bristolwood Lane and Monarch Boulevard, near Timber Trail Elementary School. South Metro Fire Rescue said its firefighters knocked down the fire and it didn't threaten any homes.

On Wednesday, the sheriff's office said a juvenile was identified as the suspect. The sheriff's office did not release any more information about the suspect or whether they were taken into custody, due to their age.

A sheriff's office spokesperson said they recommended a charge of firing woods or prairie, though the District Attorney's Office will determine what charges the suspect will face.

On Wednesday, a South Metro Fire Rescue spokesperson said the cause of the fire was under investigation.

"This incident serves as an important reminder that fire season is upon us," the sheriff's office said in a social media post. "We urge all residents to exercise caution and to educate their children about the dangers of fire. Proper awareness and preventative measures can help keep our communities safe."
