GOLDEN, Colo. — The Goltra Fire was fully contained on Thursday, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office declared.
Highway 6 through Clear Creek Canyon had been closed since the lightning-caused fire started Tuesday afternoon. The roadway was expected to open around 5 p.m. Thursday after final operations were completed, the sheriff's office said.
The fire's final acreage was mapped at 205 acres.
More than 60 firefighters worked the fire on Wednesday. Steep terrain was a challenge a sheriff's office spokesperson said during a Wednesday afternoon news conference.
Helicopters dropped water on the fire throughout the day on Wednesday. There was a water source close to the fire that crews were able to use.
No homes were threatened by the fire which started late Tuesday afternoon. It was burning on the north side of Highway 6 near Tunnel 1 in Clear Creek Canyon.
Jacki Kelley, a sheriff's office spokesperson, said when Highway 6 reopens, travelers will notice that the fire burned all the way down to the road, but crews stopped it from crossing.
