KUSA - The sunrises and sunsets have been more spectacular than usual.
Typically the best time to see them is in the fall and winter months in the mid-latitudes. But scenes like these don't happen just because.
A few ingredients are necessary to get these great colors in the sky. Things like low pollution, high clouds and sun angle play a big role in spectacular views like the one below.
How does it happen? In the morning and evening hours, sunlight has to travel farther through the atmosphere because of the low sun angle.
Because the sun travels more distance through the sky, colors like violet and blue are scattered away from our eyes because they have shorter wavelengths.
Longer wavelengths like red, orange, pink, yellow, are more visible. Also, the influence of clouds can help scatter and reflect light.
