Denver — You may have seen blue benches popping up around the city. And there’s a good reason for that.
The Blue Bench, a nonprofit working to end sex assault, is behind the benches, working to place them in spots where conversations can be started.
Karmen Carter, executive director of The Blue Bench, sat down with 9NEWS (on a blue bench, of course) to talk about them.
The Blue Bench is about providing a place where sexual assault victims “can come as they are,” while knowing that “they don’t have to sit alone on the bench,” Carter said. And park benches are seen as a forum “where community conversation can happen.”
It’s not just about supporting victims of sexual assault but about changing the conversation around sexual assault, she said. To break away from discomfort and inappropriate remarks.
