WESTMINSTER, Colo. — A girl who was walking to school in Westminster Friday morning was the victim of an attempted kidnapping, according to a Facebook post from the Westminster Police Department.
The girl was walking alone near West 125th Avenue and Delaware Street shortly after 7 a.m. when a silver vehicle approached her. She reported to police that a man driving the vehicle threatened her with a gun and told her to get inside.
She refused, according to police, and said the man grabbed her backpack and took it with him before driving away. The student made it safely to her school where she reported the incident, police said.
Both Silver Hills Middle School and Mountain Range High School are near where the incident was reported. It is not known which school the victim attends.
The Adams 12 School District sent an email to families of students at both schools. In that communication, they wrote that police believe the man left the area.
The district also noted that more staff will be present outside of the buildings on Friday. There will also be additional police and district security at the schools. Otherwise, the schools are operating normally.
Investigators are working to develop additional information about the man or the vehicle involved. Anyone with information is asked to contact Westminster Police at 303-658-4360.
