Watch this tower in Erie get demolished to make way for a neighborhood

The tower was the centerpiece of a research facility.

Last year, the Boulder Atmospheric Observatory in Erie was officially retired.

And on Tuesday morning, the 300-meter tower that was the centerpiece of the facility was demolished to make way for a new residential neighborhood in the area instead.

You can watch a video of the demolition above. West Metro Fire says there were even explosives involved!

Read on if you want to learn more about what was demolished.

Basically, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration website, the Boulder Atmospheric Observatory was used for “studying the planetary boundary layer and for testing and calibrating atmospheric sensors.”

It measured things like solar radiation and greenhouse gases, and that big tower measured temperature, relative humidity and wind.

The state of Colorado reclaimed the land from NOAA last year, terminating the lease and ending the experiments that occurred there.

The Boulder Daily Camera has a look at that controversy here: http://bit.ly/2BnutDI
