AURORA, Colorado — An Aurora family is counting their blessings this week after a driver crashed into their home Sunday night, causing significant damage but no injuries.
The crash happened around 9:45 p.m. Sunday at a home near the intersection of Vaughn Street and Uvalda Street. Bryan Gordillo, who lives in the home with his parents and siblings, said the crash happened one minute after he left the house with his girlfriend to grab some food.
Video shows the driver slamming into his neighbor’s home and then directly into his bedroom, where he had been sitting.
"The car pretty much just skipped the sidewalk, ran through this corner of the house and then rammed this truck all the way to the back of my room, destroying these three walls," Gordillo said.
Gordillo's parents were home at the time, but they weren't in the part of the house the car hit.
Video footage shows the driver running away after the crash. Gordillo returned home to find his room destroyed.
"I's pretty bad. I mean, it's the whole foundation of the house, so it's going to be pretty difficult to fix," he said. "Especially before the holiday. So, it's pretty difficult."
While waiting for insurance to assess the damage, the family is temporarily staying at another family member’s house.
Despite the destruction, Gordillo expressed gratitude that no one was injured.
"I'm just thankful that, you know, I made it out alive," he said. "It's kind of hard to think about what would have happened to me. I'm just thankful that it didn't happen to me. So I kind of just try to stay away from the worst of the situation."
Aurora Police have not released any information on a potential suspect.
In the meantime, the family has set up a fundraiser to help cover the costs while they wait for repairs.
