DENVER — Colorado has a new law that will simplify the vehicle registration process.
Under the Vehicle Registration and Certificate of Title Act, people who own more than one vehicle can now register one of their cars for less than a year so that all of their vehicles' registrations can expire at the same time.
The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles said this optional process will better serve Coloradans by allowing them to have just one expiration date to remember.
Other vehicle registration rules have also changed this year. Drivers who fail to register their vehicles in time (within 60 days of purchase) will now be fined $25 per month, up to $100. The vehicle owner will also be charged back taxes from the date the vehicle was supposed to be registered.
Also, new Colorado residents have 90 days to register their cars or they will be responsible for back taxes and fees. The state will require new residents to provide proof of when they moved here.
The DMV estimates 92,000 people move to Colorado every year and don’t get Colorado plates. The change is expected to bring in millions of dollars.
