If you list your home on Airbnb or VRBO when you skip town for vacation, the city is reminding you to get your short-term rental license before the end of the year or you'll face a potentially hefty fine.
The city of Denver began sending out guidelines this week, telling people how to actually get a license.
Back in June, the city council passed a measure for short term rentals in the city. It went into effect July 1st.
The new rules have different guidelines for homeowners and renters.
Owners can rent out their primary residence for less than 30 days at a time as long as they get a lodger's tax ID and get the green light from their home owner association.
Renters have to get permission from their landlord to operate a short-term rental.
According to Dan Rowland with the city’s Department of Excise and Licenses, the city is still working on what fines offenders will face, but says it could be up to $999. Rowland says the city tried to make the application process as easy as possible for property owners.
“We've really tried hard as a city to make this easy for people,” Rowland said. “We realize this is an online-driven business, a technology driven business, and we wanted to meet people where they were at and make it easy for them to get a license. Compliance is definitely our number one goal here.”
Property owners have until December 31st to get a short-term rental license. It costs $25 and can be applied for online at www.Denvergov.org/STR
