2 workers rescued from trench, 1 taken to hospital

Crews with South Metro Fire Rescue worked to shore up the trench near the Cherry Creek Trail before rescuing the workers.

CENTENNIAL, Colo. — Two workers were rescued after they became trapped in a trench Tuesday morning at a Centennial construction site.

Both were trapped inside the trench at a construction site on the Cherry Creek Trail near South Parker Road and East Broncos Parkway, South Metro Fire said in a social media post.

One of the workers had minor injuries. Three members of the department's technical rescue team entered the trench to assist that person who was eventually put on a stretcher and hoisted out of the trench. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The other worker was able to make it out of the trench on his own with the assistance of rescue crews.

South Metro Fire said the workers were stuck in a trench that is 10 feet wide five feet deep and 75 feet long. Crews worked to shore the sides of the trench before rescuing both people. Castle Rock Fire responded to provide additional assistance.

It's not clear how the workers became trapped but South Metro Fire said the trench did not collapse.
