COMMERCE CITY - A freight train derailed in Commerce City Tuesday afternoon.
No one was injured when eight box cars on the Union Pacific train left the rails northwest of the Rocky Mountain Arsenal
The derailment shut down East 96th Street between Interstate 76 and state Highway 2.
Union Pacific said two of the eight box cars were empty and three were hauling lumber, which some had spilled out onto the road. The derailment caused at least one tanker car, hooked behind the box cars, to lean.
Commerce City spokeswoman Julia Emko said the tanker cars were all empty. No hazardous materials have spilled.
It's not known what caused the derailment. Union Pacific and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
