Scammers convince elderly woman to hand over $8,500

Aurora Police released photos of a man and woman they said encountered the victim at a Target store and convinced her to hand over thousands of dollars.

AURORA, Colo. — Aurora Police (APD) on Thursday released the pictures of a man and woman who they said scammed an elderly woman out of more than $8,000.

The victim was shopping at a Target store on Sept. 16 when she was approached by a woman who claimed that she had won a large amount of money in a lottery game but needed an ID to collect the winnings, a Facebook post from APD says.

The suspect tricked the victim into withdrawing $8,500 from the bank to help pay for fees associated with collecting the winnings, with the promise of sharing the large payout, according to the post.

Police also released the photo of a man who they said is possibly an accomplice.

If you recognize either one of them, contact Investigator B. Olson at 303-627-3237.

You can also remain anonymous, and be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000, by contacting Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at (720) 913-7867. That tip line is operated 24 hours/day 7 days a week.

This is not the first time a scam like this has happened in Aurora. Last year, Virginia Mendoza spoke with 9NEWS after she became a victim at an Aurora Hobby Lobby.

She said she was shopping at the store days before Christmas in 2017 when she was approached and asked to help claim a lottery ticket.

“I was just trying to help this lady, and she took advantage of me," she said last year.
