SILVERTHORNE — Mike Grandy lined up along Highway 9 north of Silverthorne for the chance to watch something a little bit unusual.
“We’re going to see a cattle drive,” said Grandy.
It’s an old fashion cattle drive with cowboys and cattle dogs taking the cows down the closed Colorado Highway to get them from high elevation summer ranches to lower elevation warmer winter ranches.
It's legal in Colorado and even Summit County Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons saddles up to help.
“This is a tradition that lives in Colorado state law that allows ranchers to move cattle from ranch to ranch,” said FitzSimons.
It was an impressive sight for Grandy and others along Highway 9.
“Coolest thing I have seen all year,” Grandy said.
The western frontier might not be as big as it once was but its traditions continue.
“I think it’s awesome they do this once a year," said Grandy. "How many people see a cattle drive in their life?”
