It turns out that person of interest Jefferson County deputies were searching for after a report of shots fired in late February was a generator.
On Friday, the sheriff's office said the reason for the shots fired call out, schools going on lockout and the search for a person of interest in the area of Ken Caryl and Shaffer Drive was the result of a generator that malfunctioned.
Deputies were diligent in their investigation, as they interviewed multiple witnesses and visited several active construction sites to try and figure out what those suspicious sounds were on February 23.
For those who don't remember, deputies released a video of a potential witness to the pseudo-shooting and asked that person to come forward so they could speak to them.
The 6:30 a.m. incident prompted a community alert and prompted a shelter-in-place for nearby residents. Every JeffCo school south of U.S. 285 was placed on lockout.
It wasn't until nearly 1 p.m. that the shelter-in-place was lifted and schools returned to normal operations.
Thankfully, no shots were fired, as a faulty generator on the roof of the nearby Safeway in the 12000 block of W. Ken Caryl Avenue was the cause of the all the hullabaloo.
Deputies say that Safeway has been helpful during the investigation and is working to make sure their generator doesn't put a whole community on edge again.
