AURORA, Colo. — A 15-year-old girl was killed and another teen was seriously injured when the two were hit by a driver while crossing Colfax Avenue in Aurora on Wednesday night, according to the Aurora Police Department.

Police said the crash happened just before 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Colfax Avenue and Moline Street. The two 15-year-olds were crossing Colfax when they were hit.

The girl was taken to the hospital, where she died. Her name has not yet been released.

The boy was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. He is expected to survive.

Police said the victims were in the crosswalk, but the driver of the vehicle, a Jeep Wrangler, had the right-of-way at the time of the crash.

Police said the driver stayed on the scene. They said neither intoxication nor speed appear to be contributing factors in the crash, but their investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information that may help the investigation is asked to call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867).

This is the second crash involving pedestrians at that intersection in the past two weeks. On Jan. 24, two people were injured, one seriously, when a hit-and-run driver slammed into them at a bus stop.

That driver ran from the scene. On Thursday, Aurora Police said they arrested Jerry Lee Mahan Jr., 41, on suspicion of several charges, including leaving the scene of a crash.
