DENVER - Denver's medical examiner says a man shot by police in Denver Sunday night died of multiple gunshot wounds to his torso.
The man was identified Monday as 35-year-old Paul Castaway.
Police said Castaway was armed with a knife and got dangerously close to officers, prompting them to shoot. The man was taken to Denver Health Medical Center and later died of his injuries.
Chief Robert White said investigators believe the man stabbed his mother in the neck before he was shot. She is expected to recover.
The officer who fired the shots has been placed on paid leave per standard procedure, White says.
