SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. — A man was shot and killed by law enforcement officers in Summit County Sunday morning, the sheriff's office said.
The Summit County Sheriff's Office said a report came in around 7:20 a.m. Sunday of a man waving a firearm and banging on residents' doors in the area of Idlewild Drive and Summit Drive in the Summit Cove neighborhood.
The sheriff's office said deputies and officers tried to de-escalate the situation, but he repeatedly failed to comply with their commands and pointed a handgun at a sheriff's deputy and a Dillon Police officer.
The deputy and the officer both shot the man, the sheriff's office said. They immediately performed life-saving measures until paramedics arrived, but he died at the scene. His name has not been released.
The deputy and the officer were not hurt. They were placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
The district attorney's office said Wednesday that the two people who fired shots were Summit County sheriff's deputy Vincent Moquin and Dillon police officer Allen Jambor.
The sheriff's office said the man had been contacted several times in the past few weeks by the Summit County S.M.A.R.T. team, but refused help each time he was contacted.
“Our Systemwide Mental Assessment Response Team, our S.M.A.R.T. team as we refer to [them], responded to numerous calls with this individual over the last 24 hours and has actually been working with this individual for the last three weeks," Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons said. "During all of the interactions with this individual, at no time did the person present a danger to himself or others and refused voluntary services, and so was let go to family during these contacts.”
Each S.M.A.R.T. team in Summit County is made up of a law enforcement officer and behavioral health specialist who co-respond to mental health-related police calls.
9NEWS asked the sheriff's office if this team responded to the call on Sunday morning and if they're usually dispatched when a suspected weapon is involved. We didn't hear back as of Sunday.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting. The Fifth Judicial District Attorney's Office will conduct a criminal investigation, and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office has been requested to conduct an internal investigation that will review policy and procedure.
Anyone who witnessed the shooting or has information is asked to call Summit County Sheriff's Office Detective Sergeant Mark Gafari at 970-423-8960.
