Fire burns at former Colorado sugar mill

Mountain View Fire Rescue responded to a fire at an abandoned sugar mill in Longmont.

LONGMONT, Colo. — Mountain View Fire Rescue said a fire at an abandoned sugar mill in Longmont is out.

The department said Sunday morning that crews responded overnight to reports of flames coming from inside the sugar mill, located in the 11800 block of Sugar Mill Road, which has been vacated for decades.

Crews found the fire concentrated around wood materials that had been stored in a machine shed for years. They were able to use a tower truck to get water on the flames, but due to hazardous conditions inside the building crews were not able to enter.

Due to the safety concerns, the fire was allowed to burn out, the department said.

The department said Monday afternoon that the fire had calmed and smoke had subsided.

Crews cleared the scene, but Boulder County Sheriff's Office and Longmont Police will continue to monitor the property for flair-ups.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but the department said investigators may not be able to get inside to determine the cause due to the safety concerns with the building.

Longmont Fire, Boulder County Sheriff's Office, Longmont Police, Lafayette Fire, and Boulder Rural Fire Protection District also responded to the scene.

The city has been making efforts to redevelop the area. Plans shown last August included a boutique hotel, restaurants, retail and a performing arts center among 1,638 multi-family housing units and 600 townhomes.
