7th grader hit, killed while riding bike near school

A fellow middle schooler who was friends with Liam Stewart remembered him as "just a really good person."

LITTLETON, Colorado — A middle school student was hit and killed while riding his bike near the school Tuesday morning, the Littleton Police Department said.

Police said the crash happened just after 8 a.m. at the intersection of South Elati Street and West Arapahoe Road. The bicyclist died on the scene, police said.

The victim was a seventh-grader at nearby Euclid Middle School. A letter from the district identified him as Liam Stewart.

"Someone so young shouldn't have passed away so fast and so painfully," said Mae Noonan, a friend of Liam. "People should always remember him and how nice he was and how caring he was."

Charlotte Jones, a fellow 7th grader who was also friends with Liam, remembered him as "just a really good person."

Charlotte and Mae were among the friends and classmates of Liam who placed flowers, stuffed animals and notes at a growing memorial near the scene of the crash Tuesday.

Police said the driver of the car stayed on the scene. They said no charges have been filed, and the investigation is ongoing.

"Any loss of life is difficult, but the loss of a child is heartbreaking," police said in a news release. "LPD is grieving with the family and friends of the child and with those impacted in our community."

In a letter to families, Euclid principal Amanda Hurley said counselors, administrators and members of the district support team are available at the school "and will be for as long as we need them to provide support to our students, staff and community."
