STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. — A 19-year-old man turned himself in Tuesday in connection with a crash that caused significant damage to Steamboat Springs High School Friday night, Steamboat Springs police said.
School officials said the driver of an SUV crashed into a set of double doors by the school's bus lane that open up to the cafeteria. They said the crash caused major structural damage. It was first reported just before 10 p.m. Friday, police said.
There were tire tracks in the snow that showed the driver of the SUV was doing donuts in the parking lot before the crash, according to school officials.
Police said a 19-year-old man turned himself in Tuesday in connection with the crash. He told officers he lost control of the SUV, police said.
He is being held on charges including criminal mischief, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, leaving the scene of a crash without providing required information, and failure to notify police of an accident.
The suspect is set to appear in court for a bond advisement Wednesday, police said.
Police said the high school was back in session as usual Tuesday after a day off for the holiday Monday.
