Greenwood Village businesses unable to open 3 months after fire

The discovery of more smoke damage forced the owner of one of the businesses to make more repairs, delaying the Sportsbook Bar and Grill reopening.

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. — Two Greenwood Village businesses remain closed after a fire that happened three months ago.

Back in January, South Metro Fire Rescue responded to a fire in The Shops at Greenwood Village retail center. The business was identified as the Fuji Hibachi and Sushi restaurant.

A second fire was reported at the Sportsbook Bar and Grill, which is located in the same plaza. According to an arrest affidavit, a suspect used a rock to break glass doors to both businesses and made entry.

Since then, Sportsbook co-owner Judson Dymond has replaced almost everything inside the sports bar.

Dymond said they expected to open in May, but investigators have found more damage from the smoke, which means more repairs that need to be done before they can fully reopen.

“Frustrating and angry. Every time we talk to contractors or our landlords, we find out there’s something else or another delay. Then we update our staff, and it’s update after update, and they don’t want to hear it anymore because it’s never good,” Dymond said.

The sports bar missed out on March Madness, and will miss the playoffs for the Avs and Nuggets. They’re now expected to open in late August, hopefully just before the start of football season.

“We’re excited to have them back," Dymond said. "We can’t wait to have our guests back. I mean it’s kind of a family. We see the same people, a couple times a week, if not maybe during certain sporting events.”

According to an arrest affidavit, the suspect, Jerrell Bailey, was arrested that same night as Arapahoe County deputies responded to another burglary at the Rodizio Grill on South Clinton Street, which is located about a mile away in unincorporated Arapahoe County.

The document also says a restaurant next to Fuji Hibachi was damaged by smoke and water that flooded inside from the sprinklers next door.

Photos from the document show the suspect "actively" setting fire in the office area of the Sportsbook. A still frame taken from video shows a man, later identified as Bailey, lighting several paper plates on fire and then using them to set fires in several places.

Bailey is due in court on April 30 for a preliminary hearing.
