Identities of 2 people killed in Steamboat Springs plane crash released

The plane crashed in a mobile home park near the Steamboat airport Monday afternoon.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. — A small plane crashed in a Steamboat Springs mobile home park Monday afternoon, killing both people onboard.

The victims were identified by the Routt County Coroner's Office on Tuesday as Dan Dunn, 67, and Jessica Melton, 42. Dunn and Melton were from the Front Range, the coroner said.

Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue said the plane crashed in West Acres Mobile Home Park, which is just south of the Steamboat airport, around 4:30 p.m. Monday. Two homes and several outbuildings were engulfed in fire after the crash. Police said all of the residents of the mobile home park were accounted for.

"We heard a big boom and a thud and we just said, 'that’s not right' and we went running out on the deck and immediately there was smoke billowing over our heads,” neighbor Tom Williams said.

Williams said he lives about four trailers down from where the plane crashed. He said he ran to his neighbors' homes to make sure no one needed help. He said he was happy to learn most weren't home when the plane went down.

"Ironically enough, it hit right in between the two trailers," Williams said. "So it didn't hit either one of them."

The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane, a twin-engine Cessna 421, was approaching the Steamboat Springs Airport when it crashed. The FAA said the plane took off from Longmont, Colorado and was headed to Ogden, Utah.

"It's a surreal thing to see it because you don't see this kind of thing all the time," Williams said.

Williams said the plane that crashed into the front yard of an Arvada home earlier this month caught his attention. He said he would have never believed he'd be in a similar situation less than two weeks later.

"That was the first thing I thought of," Williams said. "We've got another plane that just dropped out of the sky."

Witnesses reported aircraft issues, but the cause of the crash remains under investigation, Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue said.

Jessica Melton was part of the figure skating community.

"Jessica was a dear friend, valued club member, dedicated U.S. Figure Skating official, respected businesswoman and all around wonderful human," Denver Colorado Figure Skating Club said in a social media post. "Our heartfelt condolences go out to her loved ones and friends. We love you and will forever miss you, Jessica."

“Our hearts go out to the families and friends of Dan and Jessica,” Steamboat Springs Police Commander Rich Brown said. “This could have been a much larger event and I want to thank all the first responders, crisis support, interpretive services and relief personnel who responded to the West Acres neighborhood.”
