Woman rescued after spending nearly 12 hours in crashed vehicle

The woman went off a roadway and crashed into a river in San Miguel County late Monday. A passerby spotted the wreckage Tuesday morning.

SAN MIGUEL COUNTY, Colo. — A woman was rescued roughly 12 hours after she went off the highway while driving a UHaul in San Miguel County, the sheriff's office said.

The woman, who is in her 50s, was driving the small Uhaul vehicle when she went off Highway 145 near mile marker 93 around 8 p.m. Monday. The crash was not reported until 7 a.m. Tuesday when a passerby spotted the wreckage.

The woman's vehicle had landed on its side with its back end in the river, the sheriff's office said.  It was in an area along the highway about three miles South of the bottom of Norwood Hill, near Beaver Creek Park. 

To get to the woman and her vehicle, crews needed to do a technical rope rescue.

A woman is recovering after driving a U-Haul off a highway and into a river in southwestern Colorado, then spending the night in the vehicle.

Multiple agencies including San Miguel County Search & Rescue, Telluride Fire, Norwood Fire, Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Department of Transportation, & Montrose Careflight responded to assist with the rescue.

The woman was removed from the vehicle and then taken by helicopter to a hospital in Grand Junction with injuries believed to be non-life threatening.
