RTD restores light rail service after computer outage

Light rail service for the E, H, R and W lines was significantly delayed Friday.

DENVER — RTD said normal service was restored for multiple light rail and bus lines that experienced significant delays Friday due to a global outage involving Microsoft.

The Regional Transportation District (RTD) said Friday the E, H, R and W lines are all impacted, with limited service available and real-time tracking unavailable.

Around 11 a.m. Friday, RTD said communications systems were in the process of coming back on long, and those lines should return to the regular schedule shortly.

By Saturday morning, RTD said normal service had resumed.

Service was suspended for the D line due to the outage. Bus shuttles were operating between I-25/Broadway and Littleton/Mineral. Around 4 p.m., RTD said bus shuttles remained in place so that crews could perform work on overhead wires near the Englewood Station that was unrelated to the outage. RTD said that work is expected to be completed within 24 hours.

There were no impacts to commuter rail services on the A, B, G, and N lines.

Issues related to bus lines were resolved around 8 a.m. Friday

A widespread outage involving CrowdStrike that is impacting access to Microsoft 365 apps and services disrupted flights and businesses around the world.

RTD said the outage initially impacted several servers used in transit operations including Computer-Aided Dispatch/Automatic Vehicle Location and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. Issues related to the former have been resolved, and real-time vehicle information was restored around 8 a.m.

Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition servers, which are used to support rail operations and communication, resumed full operations around 230 p.m. RTD said it was working to add light rail trains back into the system. A reduced number of was running across the system because of the issue.

"It will take some time for light rail operations to return to normal service levels, so customers should plan ahead and continue to expect delays," RTD said in a release.

Hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed at Denver International Airport Friday morning due to the outage, and operations at Colorado Division of Motor Vehicle locations were also impacted.
