KUSA - Roughly 21 inches of snow covered the foothills west of Fort Collins, including Rist Canyon.

"We're looking at a winter wonderland in May," said Jordan Levick, who spent Monday, his birthday, plowing snow from his driveway.

"We're kind of used to different things. Flood, snow, fires – it's just another one of Mother Nature's gifts," said Levick.

Stove Prairie School up Rist Canyon stayed open on Monday, though only 23 of 47 students attended.

"The people who live off the road had a little bigger challenge getting here today," said England.

Those who came to school got an extra long recess to play in the snow.

"Oh yeah the kids come dressed they wear their snowpants, snowboots, hats, coats, mittens," said Karen England with Stove Prairie School.

Though the main road was clear, many of the side roads up Rist Canyon were filled with too much snow. Residents report power flickering on and off. 9NEWS spotted a tree that lay on top of power lines Monday morning.

"The lights just kind of flashed off and on," said England, who said the school has a backup generator as well.

One 9NEWS viewer living up Rist Canyon emailed in to say he will be snowed in for at least another day.
