Residents at a southeast Denver apartment complex were evacuated Monday morning after a fire broke out.

More than 40 firefighters responded to 8824 East Florida Avenue for a second-floor apartment unit that caught fire at about 4:30 a.m.

South Metro Fire Rescue says one person was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. Many residents are still unable to enter the building due to smoky conditions inside.

The fire, according to South Metro, was contained to one apartment. There's no word yet on what caused it.

Florida Avenue was closed in both directions between Alton and Willow streets while crews put the fire out.
