DENVER – Already this year, the Federal Aviation Administration has received more than a thousand more reports of laser sightings by aircraft than it did all last year.
On Wednesday night, 20 sightings were reported in 16 different cities. Three of those sightings were in Dallas alone.
Late Thursday evening, several media outlets reported another three sightings in Dallas.
According to the FAA, by mid-October Denver had 118 reports of laser sightings.
9News Aviation Expert Greg Feith said anyone who thinks they can get away with pointing a laser at a plane doesn't know how easily pilots can figure out their location.
"They take the GPS coordinates of where they spot that laser – they provide it to law enforcement and law enforcement will hunt those folks down," he said.
Pointing a laser at a plane can lead to a federal felony charge punishable by up to 20 years in prison and $250,000 in fines.
