A female mountain lion and her three cubs were caught on camera in a remote area of Jefferson County Open Space.
The intimate moment caught earlier this month is a rare sight for wildlife observers. The cubs are believed to be about 1 year old.
According to the Jeffco Open Space's Facebook post, “it’s relatively uncommon for mountain lions to have this many cubs, and rarer still to get a photo of them together.”
Fortunately a wild game camera was in the perfect place to snap the photo. These cameras are motion triggered and are often used for hunting. Jeffco Open Space uses wild game cameras for animal research instead.
As we continue to coexist with mountain lions, we are reminded of the importance to preserve large areas of habitat for wild animals.
Jeffco Open Space officials offer several tips on how to coexist with mountain lions:
- Be aware of your surroundings – do not wear headphones on remote trails.
- Do not approach or run away if you see a mountain lion.
- Make yourself look big and face the lion with an expansive stance if approached.
- Avoid remote areas between dusk and dawn.
To prevent mountain lion encounters Jefferson County parks open 1 hour after dawn and close 1 hour before dusk.
