Driver who crashed into military convoy vehicle near Pueblo believed to be impaired, troopers say

CSP said someone in a Ford Expedition rear-ended a military vehicle from Fort Carson just after 4 a.m. Friday.

PUEBLO, Colo. — Multiple people were taken to the hospital when the driver of a Ford Expedition rear-ended a military vehicle that was traveling on southbound Interstate 25 near Pueblo early Friday morning.

Troopers with the Colorado State Patrol responded to the crash near milepost 107 just north of Pueblo just after 4 a.m. They said the Expedition crashed into the back of a military Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) that had a trailer. It was traveling in a convoy with other military vehicles at the time of the crash, CSP said.

The Expedition was driving over the 75 mph speed limit when the crash happened, CSP said. There were three people in the Expedition, and four soldiers in the JLTV when the crash occurred. All three people in the Ford suffered serious injuries, CSP said. Troopers said they believe the Expedition's driver, a 29-year-old man from Denver, was driving while impaired.

The soldiers involved in the crash were able to get out on their own, and ended up helping the three injured people from the Ford, CSP said. All four soldiers were taken to a hospital as a precaution, troopers said.

Initially, just the left lane of the highway was closed due to debris, but all lanes were closed to investigate and clean up the crash scene. Southbound traffic was diverted off the interstate at Exit 108 during the closure. The highway reopened around 10 a.m., according to CDOT.

Fort Carson has confirmed the involved military vehicle and personnel are from their post.

Troopers said potential charges for the Expedition's driver are pending toxicology reports.
