RED FEATHER LAKES, Colo. — Mountain firefighters hope to take advantage of snowy conditions this week and burn piles in the Red Feather Lakes area if conditions allow.

Over 1,200 piles have been burned this year on the Canyon Lakes Ranger District, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

Prescribed burn smoke could be seen this week in the following areas:

  • Red Feather 4 (Red Feather Lakes area northwest of Goodell Corner)
  • Elkhorn (southwest of Red Feather Lakes near Bellaire Lake Campground)
  • Swampou (Red Feather Lakes area south of Bald Mountain Trailhead)
  • Red Feather 3 (east of Red Feather Lakes northeast of Dowdy Lake Campground)
  • Magic Sky (appx. 4 and a half1/2 miles southeast of Red Feather Lakes on south side of County Road 74E)

The prescribed pile burns will only be ignited if conditions allow. Firefighters will conduct the burns and monitor the areas afterward.
