A 12-mile segment of Highway 6 between Colorado highways 93 and 58 in Golden will be closed this week for a $3 million rock mitigation project.

The road will be closed:

- Monday-Wednesday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

- Thursday: 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Colorado Department of Transportation advises Interstate 70 as an alternate route.

Access to Black Hawk and Central City is available by using the Central City Parkway (Exit 243) or by traveling east on Highway 6 (Exit 244) and then north on CO. 119.

Travelers can access Centennial Cone Park at the Mayhem Gulch Trailhead. The Peaks to Plains Trail at the Big Easy Trailhead will continue to be available at the west end of the canyon, but there will be no parking or access for recreational use in the work zone during project hours.

The project, which is meant to prevent rockslides, includes rock scaling removal of scaled rock and the installation of rock reinforcements and rock and mesh anchors, as well as 160,000 square feet of wire mesh.

Construction crews completed the first part of the project involving rock removal in April 2018.
