DENVER — An eye-catching hotel next to Denver’s Civic Center Park opens next week after two-and-a-half years of construction.

Developers set out from the beginning to make it the country’s first carbon-positive hotel — a title they are claiming five days before its public debut.

The Populus hotel, with its distinctive aspen tree-inspired exterior, is scheduled to open Tuesday. Grand opening celebrations will take place later in the week.

The 13-story, 135,000-square-foot hotel, at 14th Street and Colfax Avenue, cost more than $100 million to build, said Jon Buerge, president of Denver-based Urban Villages, developer of Populus.

The 265-room hotel will be managed by Chicago-based Aparium Hotel Group and features two restaurants, a coffee shop and several gathering and event spaces. Studio Gang is the architect for the hotel, and The Beck Group is the general contractor.

Plans to develop Populus began six years ago. Construction commenced in April 2022.

“When we started this project, our goal was relatively straightforward — we wanted to make sure that this project left the planet and our community in a better place than we found it,” Buerge said in an interview Friday.
