Police say a suspect was shot and killed Saturday morning as they attempted to serve a warrant. At 4:20 a.m., Lakewood Police attempted to serve a person seven warrants near 1st Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard.
When officers approached the vehicle, they noticed the man in the car appeared to have something in his hand. Instead of shooting on sight, officers set up a perimeter and kept their distance, calling the suspect via phone first.
"During that conversation, the subject told the agents he was armed," said Agent Rob Albretz with Lakewood Police, "At that point the West Metro SWAT team was notified and they came to the scene." Shots were fired as the SWAT team tried to contain the person.
The man suffered at least two gun shot wounds, according to Agent Albretz. He later died from his injuries at a local hospital.
No officers were hurt and it’s unclear if the suspect fired his weapon.
Police did not release the identity of the suspect or specify what the seven warrants were for. Investigators said the suspect was considered dangerous.
Traffic was down to a single lane on both sides of Sheridan Boulevard for hours as the investigation was underway.
