Police: Live Links chat leads to kidnapping, sex assault

WHEAT RIDGE - Police say a man is behind bars after allegedly kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman he met over a call-in dating chat line, and police believe there may be more victims.

On Live Links, multiple people can call into a chat room and talk. Sid Methner, director of business development for Live Links, says they company has been based in Canada since 1990 and have been doing business in the Denver-area since 1993. He says they run a legitimate business and handle about 21 million phone calls each month.

Police say the woman gave her personal number to Maes while on Live Links, who then called her from his cell phone and set up a meeting at the Village Inn restaurant in Wheat Ridge.

But, the woman never got a cup of coffee or a slice of pie, in fact, she never even made it inside the restaurant. According to police, Maes met the woman in the parking lot and started to kiss her.

The woman told him "no" and pushed Maes away, but police say, he picked her up and put her in the cab of his pickup and drove off, while she repeatedly told him "no."

Police say Maes drove the victim to an apartment complex, which was near a greenbelt, and assaulted her. Maes was arrested later that day and booked into the Jefferson County Jail, where he's being held on a $100,000 bond.

Authorities think there could be other victims who had contact with Maes. They say he's known only as "Carlos" in the Live Links chat room. Anyone with any information about him or other possible victims is urged to call Wheat Ridge Police Det. Bowman at 303-237-2220.

Methner says Live Links has a strong track record of assisting police agencies.

"We have not been contacted by Wheat Ridge Police at this time to the best of my knowledge," Methner told 9NEWS.

However, he says the company is more than willing to assist the police in any way it can.

Methner says the victim and the suspect were both adults who made the arrangement to meet in person on their own accord.

"But that's not to say we're not concerned about what happened," Methner said.

Methner added that once two people meet in person, Live Links is not an active participant.

According to Methner, Live Links has a list of safety procedures linked on its Web site, and a disclaimer is played for callers when they first call in to be cautious, especially concerningpersonal information./>
