9NEWS dominates Denver ratings race

9NEWS wins virtually every newscast and shows year-to-year increases in nearly every news time period

DENVER – First in the morning. First in the afternoon and evening. First at night and weekends. In a dominating performance, KUSA 9NEWS overwhelmingly won nearly every single newscast with year-over-year increases in virtually every news time period in the latest Nielsen November television ratings battle.

Morning News

9NEWS won every morning newscast on both Channel 9 and KTVD Channel 20 with the exception of the 7-8am newscast on KTVD. 9NEWS newscasts won at 4:30am, 5am, 5:30am, 6am and 8am.

9NEWS also won the weekend morning newscasts at 6am and 7-9am.

9NEWS showed significant growth year-to-year in the following Monday to Friday morning news time periods: A 52% rating increase at 4:30am. A 13% increase at 5am. Up 24% at 5:30am and 28% in rating at 6am. 9NEWS is far and away the clear choice of news viewers in the mornings which extends to the weekends where 9NEWS 6am Saturday on KTVD grew its rating 21% year-to-year while the Sunday edition improved 95%. 9NEWS at 7am on KTVD improved its rating by 34% in the Monday – Friday time period year-over-year while the 8am newscast on KTVD grew by more than 20%.

9NEWS President and General Manager Mark Cornetta said, "When you can demonstrate double-digit growth in virtually every newscast, it's clear our viewers are responding very positively to what we're doing at 9NEWS."

Evening News

Beginning with a surging 4pm newscast (+15%) with six times the rating of its only news competitor, 9NEWS firmly cemented its leadership position over the evening news block, dominating all newscasts from 4pm to 6:30pm. 9NEWS at 5pm grew its rating 14% year-to-year with nearly quadruple the rating of its closest news competitor. 9NEWS at 6pm won the local news race in its time period as the only newscast to grow its rating (+18%) from the previous year with more than three times the rating of the closest competing newscast.

The NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt is the only national evening newscast in Denver to show growth in the time period, quadrupling the rating of the nearest competitor and more than doubling the rating of both the CBS Evening News and ABC World News Tonight combined.

The entire 9NEWS block from 4pm to 6:30pm completely dominated the competition, delivering year-over-year increases while delivering more news viewers than the other news programs combined.

Late News

In the late local news race, 9NEWS at 10pm with Adele Arakawa, Kyle Clark, Drew Soicher and Kathy Sabine easily wins Monday through Friday, growing year-to-year with nearly two and half times the rating of its nearest competitor. In fact, 9NEWS has a greater rating than all other news competitors in the time period combined, commanding more than 52% of the total news audience at 10pm, and the story is even better on the weekends. The 9NEWS Weekend 10pm newscast delivers more than two and a half times the rating of its nearest competitor.

For the first time, 9NEWS at 9pm Monday through Friday on KTVD won its head-to-head battle with KDVR. Year-to-year, 9NEWS at 9pm grew 28% in rating and 9NEWS at 9:30pm grew 25%.
