Outreach teams helping more than 100 people move from streets to shelter

The City of Denver said Thursday that it will begin moving people out of a large encampment near 20th and Curtis streets.

DENVER — The City of Denver will begin moving people on Thursday morning from a homeless encampment at 20th and Curtis streets into indoor shelter,  the city said.

At the newest housing site at 4040 Quebec St., residents will have access to wraparound support services and a pathway to permanent housing as part of Mayor Michael Johnston’s House1000 initiative, a news release from the city says.

At a news conference with Councilwoman Shontel Lewis at the new housing site, Johnston called today a historic day for Denver.

"We are delighted to celebrate a major step forward in our mission to bring Denverites out of homelessness and hopelessness and into housing and hope," Johnston said.

As of Thursday morning, 317 people had been housed by the city, according to the city of Denver's House1000 Progress Dashboard. Johnston said with people moving into the Quebec Street site over the next couple of weeks, the city will be halfway to his year-end goal of 1,000 people housed.

"We will move 100 people into this facility today, move another 100 in next week. That will allow us to close two of the biggest encampments in the city," Johnston said.

"The mayor's House1000 initiative is bold," Lewis said. "There have been missteps and mistakes, and likely there will be more. But when someone is willing to lead us in a new direction, one that recognizes the humanity hanging in the balance, it is understandable that some learning out loud will need to happen."
