AURORA, Colo. — An off-duty officer from the Aurora Police Department (APD) was killed in a motorcycle crash Friday night, Chief Vanessa Wilson announced on Twitter Monday.
Officer Mikaela M. Lakin, 25, was struck and killed in the crash at S. Aurora Parkway and E. Arapahoe Road, Wilson said. That's in east Aurora near the Tallyn's Reach Library.
Police investigating the crash said Lakin was on a motorcycle going east on Arapahoe and entered the intersection on a green light. A Honda Pilot that was going west on Arapahoe made a left turn, failed to yield to the motorcycle's right-of-way, and hit the motorcycle.
The Honda's driver stayed on scene and was treated for minor injuries, APD said.
Police said that speed wasn't a factor in the crash, and neither were drugs or alcohol.
Aurora Fire Rescue offered condolences in a Facebook post on Tuesday morning:
"On behalf of the men and women of Aurora Fire Rescue, we are deeply saddened at the tragic loss of Aurora Police Officer Mikalea M. Lakin," the post says. "As part of the City of Aurora family, we grieve with Officer Lakin’s friends, fellow APD officers, and loved ones. Aurora Fire Rescue will provide any and all available support during this difficult time. Our collective mission as public servants has and always will be focused upon the community. Mikalea answered the call to serve and she will be missed."
