JEFFERSON COUNTY – The 33-acre fire that sent plumes of smoke into the otherwise clear October sky that was visible through much of the Denver metro area earlier this week has been contained.

The North Hogback Fire broke out Wednesday afternoon near C-470 and Bowles Avenue. It prompted lane closures and traffic delays in the area during rush hour – and was believed to have been sparked by passing traffic.

No structures were threatened, but some residents in the North Ranch area were told to be ready to evacuate.

The fire was 90 percent contained as of Friday night, with crews staying on the scene overnight to make sure it didn't spread.
