You can imagine that most new Coloradans want to vote, and those who don't, should.

Natives love to point out that a lot of transplants live in Colorado. That number has grown, especially over the last four years.

You can imagine some of them want to vote. and those who don't, should.

We're getting questions from transplants about how to register, especially if they don't yet have a Colorado ID.

"If you don't have a Colorado license yet, there are other ways to register. The easiest way is probably to download our paper form. It asks for you driver's license but it also says if you don't have one, you can provide the last four digits of your social security number. Or you can affirm that you don't have a driver's license or a social security number, and the county will still register you to vote," Ben Schler told Next. He works in the elections division at the Colorado Secretary of State's Office.

Wait. What?

Yes, you read that right. First-time Colorado voters don't necessarily have to show any ID to register to vote, even if you do it in person. But, you will need to send in a copy of some form of legal ID along with the ballot when it's mailed in.

If a voter chooses to use an ID with an address, like a driver's license, it must show a Colorado address. Otherwise, forms of ID without an address, like a passport, are OK.

Anyone voting in person, even if it's not the first time, has to show identification.

New voters also would have had to start living in Colorado 22 days before the election - or by October 17.

To register in person, turn in that paper form Ben mentioned above to one of these locations:

  • Your county clerk's office
  • A CO DMV office when you apply for or renew your driver's license
  • Public assistance offices
  • Military recruitment offices
  • Voter service and polling centers

By the way, we know not everyone has done it, but technically, you should have gotten a new Colorado ID within 30 days of moving here anyway. And if you're taking a registration form to the DMV, you might as well get the license and register at the same time.
