Can you spot what's wrong with this license plate?

KUSA — A 9NEWS viewer spotted something on the road that you might not immediately notice … until you take a look at the calendar.

The photo in question shows a temporary license plate. That’s not special, you see those all the time. The big issue? It expires on April 31, and the problem? April only has 30 days.

Colorado State Patrol Trooper Gary Cutler says that if law enforcement were to spot this plate, the driver would be cited for displaying a fictitious/altered number plate.

This would result in a summons, and the vehicle would be impounded. Cutler says he’s come across forged tags before – and some of them have actually been reproduced to people in bulk.

“It helps the suspect if they actually know how many days are in a month,” Cutler wrote in an email to 9NEWS. “Looking at this temp tag, the color difference on the month looks as if they changed the month and didn't realize not all months have 31 days in it.”

A spokesperson for the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles says the tag had to have been tampered with and wasn’t a mistake.

Communications Manager Sarah Werner says they have systems in place to prevent the issuance of a date that doesn’t exist.
