DENVER — The city of Denver is scrapping another proposed micro-community site meant to provide shelter to those experiencing homelessness.
The site was located at 5000 Tower Road in Green Valley Ranch on land owned by the Denver Health and Hospital Authority.
A city spokesperson said by email on Friday that the site "is not economically viable to develop due to costs to develop the land."
In August, Mayor Mike Johnston's office proposed 11 locations where new micro-communities would be developed as part of their goal to get 1,000 people into shelters by the end of the year.
Four of those proposed sites have now been scrapped by the city:
- 5000 Tower Rd.
- 1380 S. Birch St.
- 1199 N. Bannock St.
- 500 E. Yale Ave.
Johnston has said he wants to put a micro-community in every district.
The other sites still under consideration are:
- 1498 N. Irving St.
- 950 W. Alameda Ave.
- 2301 S. Santa Fe Dr. (Under construction - expected to open by January)
- 4595 N. Quebec St.
- 12033 E. 38th. Ave. (Under construction - expected to open by January)
- 3700 Galapago St.
- 1375 N. Elati St. (Under construction - expected to open by January)
According to the House1000 Dashboard, the city has so far housed 311 people experiencing homelessness through the initiative. The goal, according to Johnston's office, is to "house 1,000 unsheltered individuals and permanently close encampments by the end of 2023."
