Englewood school board candidate turns himself in to police, released on bond

Davon Williams is running unopposed for an at-large seat on the Englewood Schools Board of Education.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — An at-large candidate for Englewood Schools Board of Education, Davon Williams, turned himself in to police Monday morning and no longer has an active warrant out for his arrest.

Court documents show he was released on bond with a new court date. It was not clear which county Williams turned himself in to.

Williams will be elected to the Englewood School Board because he's running unopposed. Englewood Police said last week they had been trying to take him into custody and would arrest him if they found him. The warrant was for aggravated car theft. He has two prior felony theft convictions from 2012 and 2014.

On Oct. 27, he posted on social media that everyone has a past and that his team is discussing next steps.

That isn't enough to keep Williams off the board.

Englewood Superintendent Joanna Polzin said in an email that Williams would be removed only if there was a successful recall election initiated by the public or if he misses the 10-day window to take the oath of office.

"Some in our community have raised questions about the qualifications of Mr. Williams to serve on our Board of Education," Polzin wrote in her email.

The qualifications for candidates for school board director are established by Colorado Revised Statutes Section 22-31-107. Candidates are required to file an Affidavit of School Director Candidate on Qualifications for Office with the Designated Election Official (DEO). The DEO is allowed to rely on Wiliams' affidavit and the candidate’s certifications without further investigation, Polzin said.

"As a district and community, we are committed to our core values while serving our students and families, which are high expectations, accountability, integrity, respect and community," Polzin wrote. "Our Board of Education also upholds our core values as they serve our community, and we expect the same commitment from our soon-to-be elected board members."

According to his LinkedIn profile, Williams describes himself as a "Managing General Partner" of Canberra Partners LLP. On the group's website, it lists a series of sites that it provides "web hosting and design" for, including seven explicit domain names.

9NEWS reached out to Williams for comment and has not heard back.
