KUSA — We shouldn’t have to remind people to put out their campfires, but here we are.

In today’s edition of “That’s Not How You Colorado,” here’s a Facebook post from Joe Randall.

Over the weekend, he said he was driving past a camping spot near the Mt. Elbert Lodge when he saw an unattended campfire that had ignited nearby trees.

Randall said he used bottles from the nearby campsite to dump water onto the fire. His wife called for help.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office dispatched firefighters.

And luckily, the situation didn’t get any worse.

Just a reminder that to properly extinguish a campfire, you should drown it with water, stir it with a shovel to wet any remaining debris, and then move some dirt from the fire site onto the ashes to fully smolder it.
