DENVER — The Colorado Rockies achieved greatness in 2007. Yes, they made it to the World Series, but the team also coined “Rocktober" in the process.
Fans and bandwagoners alike hope for a playoff berth every year, when they might be able to use the catchy slogan for a post-season run.
Not just anyone can go throwing around “Rocktober,” though.
The Colorado Rockies trademarked Rocktober on Oct. 4, 2007, and that still stands today. Essentially, Rocktober can't be used for bumper stickers, T-shirts, or promotions at bars and restaurants. Only the Rockies have the right to make money off the phrase.
As one might predict, the Rockies have several trademarks, including one for their standard logo, the “CR” logo seen on players' hats, and even “The Rockpile,” the name for a section of seats in Coors Field.
As one young journalist pointed out in this 9NEWS report from 2007, all the other months are still up for grabs, as far as the government's concerned. Rockruary, anyone?
