Archeologists uncover the identity of the mystery Wash Park backyard pit

Denver, Colorado — A 5-foot deep pit in a Wash Park backyard had tons of Next viewers speculating about the identity of the large hole.

Even Governor Hickenlooper joined in on trying to analyze what the purpose of the pit was.

Molly Kreck was recently trying to move a bush into her backyard. While she was digging, her shovel just disappeared into the ground.

“I probably got a foot down and the earth just gave way, and the shovel just completely disappeared into the ground,” she said. “At this point, I just sort of stood here for a minute… and thought… what might this possibly be.”

She felt around and found a mysterious pit with brick around the outside, not lined with mortar.

Little did she know that this hole got people from all over Colorado guessing: is it a well? A privy? An incinerator? A root cellar? A fire pit?

Even Governor Hickenlooper used his geology background to analyze what the pit could be (though he didn't guess correctly).

Well, we finally have the answer folks, and we're ready to "bury" this story.

Kreck summoned two archeologists to her house and they said...drumroll please...

The pit is a cistern. They said that the pit was used to collect rain water.

Kreck told us that she plans to bury a time capsule into the pit before filling it.

So, maybe in a couple years, you might see a story about a mystery time capsule found in a brick lined pit...and you'll know exactly which pit they're talking about.
