GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. — Two decades ago, a fleet of vans was used to take tourists from Glenwood Springs to the top of Iron Mountain for cave tours and the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park.
But times and technology have changed. Park owner Steve Beckley installed the Iron Mountain Tram 16 years ago. It had 18 cars and could get about 250 people up the mountain each hour.
As the Caverns and Adventure Park became more popular and added theme park rides and tours of the lines, some visitors waited an hour to make the ride to the top.
That's why a new 44 cabin gondola was built over the past four months. It can carry about 1,000 people an hour up the mountain. The entire ride covers 4,300 feet and takes about seven minutes. The gondolas are also wheelchair accessible.
A ride on the Gondola cost $19 for adults and $14 for children. It'll set you back $32 for a Gondola and Cave tour for adults and $27 for children. A pass to ride the gondola, get cave tours and ride the theme park rides is $58 for adults and $53 children.
