New Adams Co animal shelter opening at south end of Riverdale Park

Picture it: an expanded playground, more restrooms, a ropes course, a brand new roundabout to have trouble navigating, upgrades to an amphitheater, a new trail system and, especially, a brand new animal shelter! All of this any more are under construction in the Riverdale Regional Park.

Bordered on the north by 136th Avenue and on the south by 120th Avenue, Riverdale Regional Park is known for its golf course. And of course the fair.

At least, that's the top half of the park. The southern half... isn't well developed. Well, if you've been keeping a close watch on the county's community plans (because who hasn't?) you may have been prepared for this news, but here goes anyway:

The southern half of Riverdale Regional Park is getting a planned facelift, including a new branch of the animal shelter.

Any Adams County residents wandering around Henderson Road and E. 120th Parkway may have noticed some apparent construction hobbling traffic a little bit. That was for a new water well for the site.

Ground-breaking on official construction happened Tuesday. A spokesperson for the county said construction would take about two years.

This new animal shelter is pegged to have quite a few amenities, including: enhances services (?), modernized kennel spaces (!), more public parking (!!), private adoption rooms (!!!) and many more services. You can find out a lot about the plans for the park in the county's community plan.

This new shelter will replace the older one, as the county said their current shelter just isn't big enough to handle the demands of the county. There's a lack of kennel space and parking - a small health clinic, and the small fact that the current shelter is basically just a converted warehouse.

But the new one? We'll let the county explain it:

"The old days of stark and dreary pound-type structures have given way to visually attractive, well-designed, maintainable facilities, allowing for excellence in animal sheltering and an array of services to support and engage residents," reads the post about the new shelter on the county's website.

The new shelter is expected to be more than 43,000 square feet and a state-of-the-art facility!
