DENVER BUSINESS JOURNAL - The new shuttle buses for the free 16th Street Mall will be fully electric, zero-emission and a lot quieter.
The Regional Transportation District on Monday approved a contract with BYD Motors Inc., a Chinese vehicle-maker backed by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK.A), for up to $27.1 million to buy 36 new electric shuttles for the 16th Street MallRide.
The 16th Street Mall shuttle is RTD's busiest bus route and uses an existing fleet of 36 ultra-low emission hybrid-electric vehicles that can carry up to 115 passengers.
BYD Motors, part of BYD Co. Ltd., will build the battery-powered buses in China and assemble them in California to comply with safety standards and "Buy America" requirements, RTD said.
